Islam fights begging by paying zakat and alms

Sheikh Ahmed 3

The main reasons for the begging phenomenon are man’s deviation from the right path, lack of awareness and understanding as well as absence of the religious deterrent which causes some people to resort to such an easy way of getting money. Those people simply think that begging is the best and most comfortable way to gain money without thinking that by asking for money they waste their dignity, honour and respect and they put themselves in the bottom rung of the society, thus they become humble and inferior among their peers. Islam ordered the rich to help the less-fortunate meet their basic need for food so that they need not waste their dignity asking people for money. Allah has ordered Muslims to pay zakat (charity) to the poor and the needy as a means of solidarity within the Muslim society, besides He ordered them to give out alms to the less-fortunate among us so that they can afford to meet their needs without having to ask for money.  Allah says: (It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is the one who believes in Allah and the last day and the angels and the Book and the prophets, and gives away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for (the emancipation of) the captives, and keeps up prayer and pays the zakat, and the performers of their promise when they make a promise, and the patient in distress and affliction and in time of conflict — these are the ones who are true and these are the ones who are the pious).
